Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica - Sunday, Nov 8/9

Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica - Sunday, Nov 8/9

This Sunday we celebrate the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, the cathedral of the Pope and “mother and head of all churches in the world.” Built by Emperor Constantine in the fourth century, it was the first public church in Rome. This feast reminds us that every church building is a sign of the living Church and that each baptized person is a living stone in the temple of the Holy Spirit. Let us pray for the Pope, for unity in the Church, and for hearts renewed in faith.

Remembrance Day Prayer

Remembrance Day Prayer

Heavenly Father,
On this day of remembrance, we pause to honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who gave their lives for peace and freedom.

We remember the men and women of every generation who have served in times of war and conflict, and we give thanks for their courage and selflessness. May their bravery inspire us to work for justice, peace, and understanding in our world today.

Bless those who continue to serve in our armed forces, and comfort the families who have lost loved ones. May your presence bring them peace, hope, and strength.

Lord, guide us to be instruments of your peace, to cherish the freedoms we enjoy, and to work tirelessly for a world where war is no more.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Remembering and Praying: Remembrance Day and the Month of November

On November 11th, Canada pauses to honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who have defended our country in times of war and conflict. Remembrance Day is a solemn occasion, marked by reflection, gratitude, and prayer for all who have laid down their lives for peace and freedom.

As Catholics, this day calls us not only to remember but also to pray. We can offer the Mass, personal prayers, and acts of charity for the souls of the deceased, especially for those who have died in service to others. We may also participate in local ceremonies, observe moments of silence, and teach our children about the value of sacrifice, service, and peace.

The entire month of November in the Catholic Church is dedicated to prayer for the holy souls in Purgatory. It is a time to remember our departed loved ones and all the faithful departed. During this month, we are encouraged to:

  • Pray for the dead through personal prayers, the Rosary, or visiting cemeteries.
  • Offer Mass intentions for the souls of family members, friends, and even those we do not know personally.
  • Practice acts of charity and mercy, offering our good works for the benefit of the souls in Purgatory.

In November, remembrance and prayer connect us to both history and eternity. By honoring those who have served and praying for the deceased, we acknowledge the value of life, the reality of death, and the hope of resurrection. Let us unite as a parish in prayer, gratitude, and reflection during this sacred month.

New Doctor of the Church - John Henry Newman

New Doctor of the Church - John Henry Newman

Doctor of the Church: What It Means and Who Is John Henry Newman

During the Mass on the Solemnity of All Saints, Pope Leo XIV proclaims Saint John Henry Newman a Doctor of the Church. His legacy, the Pope emphasized, is to form people "so that they may shine like stars in their full dignity.”

In the life of the Catholic Church, some saints are honored not only for their holiness but also for their profound contribution to the understanding of faith and theology. These saints are given the title “Doctor of the Church.”

A Doctor of the Church is a saint whose writings and teachings are considered exceptionally important for guiding the faithful and deepening the Church’s understanding of divine truth. Not every saint receives this title; it is given to those whose wisdom, insight, and theological work have had a lasting and universal impact.

One of the most recent saints to receive this title is John Henry Newman (1801–1890). Newman was an English priest, theologian, and poet. He began his life as an Anglican clergyman but converted to Catholicism in 1845, becoming one of the most influential Catholic thinkers of the 19th century.

Newman’s writings focus on the journey of faith, the role of conscience, and the harmony between reason and belief. He emphasized that faith is not blind but guided by reason, and he encouraged a thoughtful, personal approach to understanding God. One of his key thoughts was: “To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often.” He also stressed the importance of the development of doctrine, explaining how the understanding of faith can grow over time without changing its truth.

On the day of his declaration as a Doctor of the Church by Pope Francis in 2019, the Pope said:

"John Henry Newman was a man who combined fidelity to the Church with a profound respect for conscience and reason. Through his life and writings, he teaches us that faith and reason are not opposed but are partners in the pursuit of truth."

By honoring Newman as a Doctor of the Church, the Church recognizes his extraordinary contribution to Christian thought and invites the faithful to read his works, learn from his insights, and follow his example of thoughtful and faithful discipleship.
