Sunday School vs. Sharing the Word

Sunday School vs. Sharing the Word

Many parents and parishioners ask: “What is the difference between Sunday School and Sharing the Word? Are both needed in the parish?”

Both programs share the same goal: to help children grow in their faith. However, they are distinct in focus, method, and experience.

1. Sunday School
Sunday School is usually a formal religious education program for children. It is structured like a class:

  • Children are taught about the Bible, the lives of the saints, Church teachings, and Catholic practices.
  • Lessons are often age-appropriate, including activities, crafts, or quizzes to help children understand and remember what they learn.
  • Sunday School may follow a set curriculum and often prepares children for sacraments.

2. Sharing the Word
Sharing the Word is more informal and focuses on experiencing God’s Word in a personal and reflective way.

  • It often involves reading a Scripture passage together, discussing its meaning, and thinking about how it applies to daily life.
  • This program encourages children to express their thoughts, ask questions, and share experiences related to their faith.
  • Sharing the Word is usually shorter, more interactive, and can be an entry point for children who are just beginning to explore their faith.

Why both programs are valuable

  • Faith formation: Both programs nurture a child’s understanding and love of God. Sunday School gives structured knowledge, while Sharing the Word builds personal connection and reflection.
  • Community building: Children meet peers and learn together, which strengthens the sense of parish family.
  • Support for parents: Practically, these programs allow parents a chance to fully participate in the Mass, including listening to the homily, without worrying about keeping their children engaged the entire time. It provides a peaceful environment for both parents and children to grow in faith.

In short, Sunday School and Sharing the Word are complementary. One gives knowledge, the other fosters reflection. Together, they help children grow in understanding, love, and practice of their Catholic faith.

🌿 You Are Invited: Lenten Penitential Service 🌿

Dear Parish Family,

As we journey through this holy season of Lent, we warmly invite you to join us for Mass on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 6:00 PM, followed by our Lenten Penitential Service.

Several priests will be available to hear confessions, giving everyone a special opportunity to experience God’s mercy, receive His grace, and prepare our hearts for the joy of Easter. Whether it has been a while since your last confession or you come regularly, all are welcome to take part in this sacred time of reflection and renewal.

Please note: Confession is also available 45 minutes before weekday Masses for your convenience.

Come as you are, bring your family, and take this beautiful chance to pause, reflect, and grow closer to Christ during this Lenten season. Let us journey together in prayer and reconciliation, opening our hearts to God’s love.

With blessings,
Fr. Marius

The Silver Rose Program is the Knights of Columbus's longest running devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. For 62 years, Silver Roses have been stewarded by Knights of Columbus councils along routes from Canada to Mexico. This tradition is currently in the midst of the nine year novena toward the 500th anniversary of Our Lady's miraculous appearance to St. Juan Diego in 1531.

The Silver Rose will be at our St Francis de Sales Parish in High River on Tuesday March 17, 2026 at the 7:00 pm Mass. There will be devotional prayers and Adoration accompanied with the Silver Rose after this Mass.

All parishioners are invited and encouraged to attend.

Dear Parishioners!

Dear Parishioners!

Dear Parishioners,

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who participated in the 40-hour Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Your presence, prayers, and devotion during these sacred hours made this time of worship a truly uplifting experience for our entire parish family. Each hour spent before the Eucharist—whether in quiet reflection, silent prayer, or communal devotion—helped to fill our church with a spirit of reverence, peace, and love for our Lord.

To our families, thank you for bringing your children and young people to share in this prayerful experience. Your example of faith and devotion is a beautiful gift to the next generation, showing them the importance of spending time with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.

To our volunteers, your commitment, energy, and care in making this Adoration run smoothly did not go unnoticed. Every act of service, every moment of attention to detail, contributed to the sacred atmosphere that allowed us all to grow closer to God.

A very special thank you goes to Gerry McCallum, whose dedication and hard work were truly instrumental in organizing this beautiful devotion. Gerry’s efforts ensured that everything was in place for all of us to participate fully and experience the Lord’s presence in a meaningful way.

We are truly blessed to be part of a parish community so willing to give of their time, heart, and prayers. Your faithfulness strengthens our parish and inspires all who enter our doors. May God bless each of you abundantly for your generosity, your love, and your devotion to the Eucharist.

With gratitude and blessings,
Fr. Marius

Solemnity of St. Joseph – Protector, Patron, and Model for Fathers

On March 19, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. St. Joseph holds a unique place in our faith as the earthly father of Jesus, the faithful guardian of the Holy Family, and a man of quiet strength, humility, and unwavering trust in God.

St. Joseph is the Principal Patron of Canada and the Patron of the Universal Church, reflecting his universal importance in guiding and protecting God’s people. His life teaches us the value of faithfulness, obedience, and courageous love.

Today, St. Joseph remains a powerful role model for fathers and all men in society. He shows how to protect and provide for one’s family, lead with love, and nurture religious life at home. In a world where family life faces many challenges, St. Joseph’s example inspires fathers to be both guardians and spiritual leaders, helping their families grow in faith, hope, and charity.

As we honor him this Solemnity, let us turn to St. Joseph in prayer, asking for his guidance to be steadfast in our responsibilities, faithful in our commitments, and courageous in living out God’s call in our families and communities.
